Vandal is now stable!!!!

His hematocrit came up to 19.5 today! Last night's lower reading was probably due to his blood being a little diluted by the fluids they were giving him. He's also producing reticulites (baby red blood cells), though not as many as they would like to see. That may clear itself up as he recovers. We still have nothing on why his hematocrit crashed.

His glucose is still confusing them. It was in the upper 300s. The vets told us to put him back on his regular dose, but I vetoed that. They had thought we gave him a unit of insulin this morning and that he needed more, but we wanted to wait until they took his glucose reading. So he's to 1/2 unit twice a day, which should keep his blood sugar from getting dangerously high, but not allow him to crash. No one's sure why he's crashed twice in 6 weeks; options are: he's going into remission from the diabetes (not uncommon in cats), he's just a brittle diabetic (which is what he's been since the beginning), or they just don't know (the most likely option). We'll just keep testing as he gets better and keep adjusting his doses as needed.

Regarding the surgical staples, they may not have migrated at all. Their current location may be where they were initially placed because of the cyst. So this isn't a problem.

So, he's still a bit of a sick kitty, but we're no longer on 12-hour watches for him. We have no idea what his medium- or long-term prognoses are (the vets have quit trying to predict him), but his short-term prognosis looks pretty reasonable.

Yea!!!!!

When we do lose him, Julia wants to gild him. She says it would be cheaper than what we've done and he deserves it.

I said, he's borrowing lives from other kitties who didn't use up all theirs. Wow.

Go Vandal!

One of our vets said that Vandal has used 19 of his 9 lives. Another friend said that he could have all of Number 5's lives -- Number 5 must have donated all of his because he was stillborn.

Yay! I'm glad to hear he's stable now.

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] mg4h -- it sounds like he's harvesting unused lives from other cats.

I'm so glad to hear he's doing so much better. I know how heartbreaking it can be when they get sick and it looks like you're going to lose them. I've been through it.
