Just got off the phone with my mother. This is going to be a little incoherent because I am deliberately omitting names at the moment.
He and another guy broke into a home, stole some ATVs and went joyriding. One of the people whose land they were joyriding on objected, so they left. The guy came back joyriding again and shot the woman twice when she objected again. Her boyfriend came out and shot at him with a BB-pistol. The guy returned fire. He then went and committed suicide. I'm glad to say, she survived.
The guy was the younger brother of one of my best friends in high school. My siblings and I rode the bus my friend, his younger sister, and younger brother. He was a nice kid.
His family is devastated. Apparently my mother was the only one of the neighbors who has called. When the guy's mother said that and wondered why, if perhaps the neighbors were blaming them, my mother responded, "No. They don't know what to say. All I can say is I'm sorry; I feel for you from the bottom of my heart. I can't imagine what you are going through." And it's true.
My family is rocked by what happened. They knew him; we all did. He was a good kid until he got into drugs. This spree happened after he was released on bail for a parole violation and was to have a hearing next week that would likely send him back to jail for the remainder of his sentence (for drugs or somesuch). But he was underneath it all a good, if messed up, kid.
My brother is taking it especially hard. He knew the guy well in school, looked after him on the bus a bit. But the woman who was shot is the girlfriend of his best friend. My brother found the guy's truck and tried to get the police to investigate. The police followed procedures, but by then it was too late. My brother feels the police failed - they should have investigated immediately then the guy would be alive. I'm not convinced that he wouldn't have committed suicide by cop if he were alive when the cops found him. I think he committed suicide because he thought he killed a woman.
This is a lot to process first thing in the morning, before breakfast. I haven't seen him since I left high school - he was ten or so at the time. So I really don't know him that well any more. I don't know if I'm shocked because this is the sibling of a close friend in high school, if I'm shocked because it happened in my parent's neighborhood (the actual events were a couple miles away from my parents), or if I'm shocked because it happened out in such a rural area. Probably a bit of all three.
