Apr. 22nd, 2005 10:10 pmI went to see Bob Edwards speak. Very thought-provoking. While he may be a little bitter (who wouldn't) over what happened at NPR, he hasn't let it sour him on the concept. He truly is committed to Public Radio. And, he can now be heard on one of the satellite stations. Unfortunately, he's no longer doing news; he's only doing interviews of public figures. I miss him on NPR; it's not the same news.
One of the reasons Edwards was speaking here is to promote his new book about Ed Morrow. The more he spoke about the climate Morrow reported in, the more I could see parallels between the McCarthy era of suppression of freedom and the news and what Bush is doing now. It's truly frightening. The parallels are even more spooky when you realize Morrow was drummed out of journalism (in a polite way) over his unwillingness to back down from the controversies of his day, especially over journalistic responsibility, and the way Edwards was pushed out of NPR.
