Pennsic Weecap
Aug. 12th, 2007 03:54 pmI accomplished the thing I most wanted to do this Pennsic -- I rediscovered why I joined the SCA and why I started doing heraldry! This was a big deal -- most of you don't know how seriously I considered gafiating after I stepped down as Lions Blood. I'm not now, but I'm also NOT playing with the local group.
As for why I started playing, I re-remembered that a SCAdian has a friend everywhere. On our way to Pennsic, we ran into a SCAdian on her way to Pennsic. We didn't have much time to chat as we were boarding the plane, but it felt nice to talk to someone. On the way home, we ran into a SCAdian (different one) at the airport. We had a nice chat and lunch! BTW, Stafn says hi to Illadore (if she's reading).
Heralds Point was a madhouse as usual. We did over 450 submissions, which is lower than previous years. Part of that was likely the rain -- no one wants to go anywhere when the sky has opened and is bucketing all over that place. But that meant that the submitters were bunched up into the good weather bits, which were short and sweet on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Fortunately, we didn't get hit as badly as we might have.
I didn't stick my head much out of Herald's Point -- that was partly weather and partly need. Tuesday was mine and Julia's day out of the Point, but that didn't happen because of the rain. We got out in the late afternoon and committed shopping. Books, we bought books! (And fabric on Friday.)
Running into everyone at Pennsic was great. There are a few we didn't see, such as Christofano (we missed you!). Dinner in Allistar and Myfawny's camp was great. We enjoyed the wonderful conversation. Creador is so sweet -- every year at Pennsic, he tells me his device passed and how great my idea for clearing a conflict was. Stroke, stroke -- ooo, don't stop, my ego is eating it up! Hildarun and Brandubh's baby is sooo darling.
We went over to Allison's twice. Drinking with her is always fun and you never know where the conversation may lead. We talked a lot about CoA stuff, peer/associate relations, old history, and coffee. Ioseph's father used to own a roaster and sold it in the late 80's/early 90's. So Ioseph knows a fair bit about coffee and he and Julia coffee-geeked for a while.
We got wet at Pennsic, my throat got nasty, and we dried out. We need to get another pavilion set up for Pennsic. On the day we were leaving, Julia developed a nasty rash around her ankles and has a lot of edema in her feet and ankles. So she's sitting here with her feet propped up to keep the swelling down. If it doesn't get better soon, I'm going to make her go to the doctor.
So now Julia and I need to work out our event schedule for the next few months. I'm feeling up to more traveling so we will be going further afield to play now.
