is not a number that you want the vet to give you as your kitty's blood sugar. AFTER you've given him nearly half a cc of Karo syrup and force-fed him half a teaspoon of wet kitty food (he wouldn't open his mouth to eat). He's currently at the emergency vet (I got home at 4:45 to find him collapsed in the bathroom) on IV glucose and recovering nicely.

[livejournal.com profile] cellio, I think Vandal and Erik are having a little competition to see who can wig out his people more. I think we both wish they would stop.

Yikes! I hope he's feeling better soon! (What should a blood-sugar number be, usually? I can tell from context that this isn't it, of course...)

Vandal, Erik -- stop it. You win, ok? Your people would like to return to normal lives, please.

We want his number above 100, preferably above 120 (to avoid this issue). 25 is incipient seizure territory (though we were spared a seizure, at least while I was home -- we think there was no seizure at all). We don't know what, if any, damage this episode has caused.

Ack! Poor Vandal. Give him an extra hug for me, when you see him next.

Not looking good

Things are not looking good. Not only was Vandal's blood sugar dangerously low, but so is his hemocrit (measurement of hemoglobin). In fact, our regular vet said he shouldn't be able to stand. And Vandal is having black, tarry stools (sign of internal bleeding -- which he didn't have yesterday). So we are getting an ultrasound to find out why; unfortunately the likely suspects are an ulcer or tumor. Both of which can be treated by surgery, but he's too weak for that.

We can also give him a transfusion, but kitty blood is hard to get -- our vet found ONE unit in town. And we can only give it to him if the type and cross-match fit. We don't want to go that route until we know why he is bleeding internally as the blood is expensive and hard-to-get.
