I hate computers!!!!
Jan. 14th, 2005 11:36 amSince last fall, I have been having increasing problems with my system. First it started with being unable to print, then Word would lock up, then Netscape started having problems. Well I got that all sorted out (sort of, still can't print, but Word doesn't lock up). Then I was unable to use any shortcut keys or macros in Word. Well, yesterday, my system started having some trouble identifying icons (including MS icons). In Windows, that can be a big warning sign. So I backed up my data (or so I thought) and started from scratch.
Reinstalling the OS went smoothly; upgrading to 2000 was even easier. Then...It took over two hours to find the right driver for my ethernet card. Apparently it isn't included on the Win 2000 upgrade disk. Then I started installing all the system patches and service releases. Installing SP 4 took over two hours!??? Then this morning when I logged into finish the other system patches, I found that instead of 8 (last night) there were now 33!!! SP4 must not have installed correctly. I got that done then put my data back on my HD. Installed Netscape and Word (still haven't tested print functionality) only to discover that the backup didn't have anything less than 1 year old on it!!
I copied what I thought was my My documents file from my computer to Julia's CD-RW. Apparently she had an old copy or something floating around on her system and I copied that instead! So I have lost all the ILs I've done, all the resume revisions, all the brochure work for my freelance business, saved e-mails, and all the precedents. Fortunately, I have been able to recover the precedents for this tenure from online (where I'd posted them earlier this week) and get the resume stuff from my various job sites. However, the brochure is a total loss, unless a copy is on Juliana's machine. So I have a *lot* of recovery work ahead of me. Not fun.
