Bush's legacy on the Unites States is a rather scary proposition. Not only is he nominating all 14 members of the Federal Reserve Board, thereby securing his fiscally irresponsible legacy of government handouts to the wealthy lives on, but he will definitely appoint one and possibly two Supreme Court justices.
One Bush nominee to the Supreme Court we might have been able to tolerate. But what will start happening to our civil rights if Bush gets to nominate not one, but two justices. Bush claims he doesn't want "activist" judges, when what he really means is he doesn't want judges who exert their responsibility to serve as a check and balance to the executive and legislative branches of government, to speak for those without the power to speak for themselves. O'Connor has been the primary swing vote on the Court; we as citizens needed that. And I am afraid that we will lose it under Bush. His goal is to reverse many if not most of the social reforms we've experienced in the last 45 years. We are in danger of losing affirmative action, reproductive rights, and the separaton of church and state. Already the Bush administration has assaulted our Constitutionally guaranteed civil rights with the U.S. Patri(di)otic Act. And the current Court has undermined our basic property rights, freedom of the press and states' rights. How much worse can it get?
I'm afraid, very afraid. I realized it was worse than I thought. And I thought it was pretty bad.
