Nov. 25th, 2005 08:41 amWe had a rather unconventional Thanksgiving (in the general American concept of Thanksgiving) but rather normal for us. I made ginger cookies, adding my modifications to my mother's recipe. I didn't want to roll them out with a rolling pin, so I tried for a drop cookie texture. Well, I didn't *quite* get what I was looking for, but what I got turned out quite nicely. I rolled the dough into a walnut-sized ball. I then flattened the balls a bit and baked. The cookies didn't spread, but they did puff up nicely. I got better flavor by using dark molasses not light or medium like suggested. Mmmmmm, cookies.
For dinner I made sushi. The recipe for the rice is missing a key bit of information -- you don't necessarily add all the vinegar, just enough to coat the rice. I also tried making the rice by weight, not volume, so I had a lot more vinegar than needed. So the rice was really wet and there wasn't as much of it as I expected. It still turned out really yummy. I chopped my leftover fillings (yellow-fin tuna, carrots, and avocado) finely, added a tablespoon of rice vinegar, mixed it all together, then stuffed my avocado shell with it. That turned out really well too.
Then we went and saw the Lion King production. We were able to get really good seats (better than we first thought(). We were 14 or so rows back and along the off center aisle. So we got to see the actors as they promenaded into the theatre at the beginning of each act. For the most part, I really enjoyed the show but there were a few new songs that I didn't think worked too well. I really liked the reinterpretation of the show into somewhat less "kiddie" tones.
I did get annoyed about halfway through the first act when some guy in the row behind us decided to take his kid out of the theatre. He wasn't paying attention to the row in front of him. So I got my head jerked around by the kid's legs catching on my scrunchie -- OUCH!. But, the kid sitting next to me was amazingly well-behaved. He wasn't more than 6 or 7 but he wasn't fidgety or impatient while waiting for the show to begin. It was so refreshing to see such a well-behaved kid.
Tomorrow we are having some people over for conviviality -- games, conversation and food. Fun!
